Data Centers: Server Refresh Lowers Costs
Whitepaper: Realizing Data Center Savings with an Accelerated Server Refresh Strategy
Many enterprises are faced with an ever-growing number of IT applications and increasing amounts of storage data. As a result more and more data centers have reached their limits in terms of required space, power cosumption, and cooling.
To tackle this challenge head-on, Intel began replacing older servers with new, more powerful and energy-efficient systems in 2007. In the future, these servers will be replaced in a regular four-year cycle. The new servers consume much less energy than their predecessors, offer a considerably higher computing capacity for complex, business-critical applications, and eliminate the need for large investments in new data centers. Moreover, a consolidation rate of 13:1 can be achieved with the new servers, thus reducing the overall number of physical systems and substantially lowering energy costs. In 2008, this server refresh strategy resulted in savings of approximately USD 45 million for Intel.
Indicators for Energy Efficiency in Data Centers
Whitepaper: Increasing Data Center Efficiency through Metering and Monitoring Power Usage
With electricity costs increasing, the high volume of energy consumed by data centers is a challenge companies are facing everywhere. If efficient methods for measuring energy consumption are developed, potential for energy savings both in IT and facility management can be identified.
Power usage effectiveness (PUE) and data center efficiency (DCE) are important performance indicators here. These values are calculated based on the amount of power used by the IT equipment (for example, servers, storage, network) and the general energy consumption for the building (for example, light, heat, cooling system). Read how these performance indicators helped optimize the energy efficiency of a five-year-old data center in India and how it managed to reduce its operating costs.
