International Conference on Energy-Aware High Performance Computing

by , published: August 30th, 2010

Hamburg 16. September 2010

Dr. Markus Leberecht is going to present results of Datacenter2020 at the “International Conference on Energy-Aware High Performance Computing” www.ena-hpc.org in Hamburg, Germany on Sept 16, 2010.

“Macro and Micro-level Energy-Savings Through COTS Technologies”, Markus Leberecht, Intel GmbH
Data center infrastructure optimization and energy-aware programming are two important practices in the toolbox of energy-efficient IT operation. In this talk, we are going to demonstrate how Intel engages in these two fields to drive highly pragmatic approaches towards lowering total and relative energy use in enterprise and high-performance computing.

CeBIT

Diane M. Bryant, Chief Information Officer at Intel Corporation, and Olaf Heyden, member of the board of management and Head of ICT Operations at T-Systems.

The companies were able to reduce their power usage effectiveness (PUE) from 1.9 to less than 1.4 at their test data center in Munich. This value shows how much of the energy used is actually converted into computing performance. Since not only the processors but also the server cooling system, for example, use energy, this value has been at 1.9 on average. Read more

T-Systems and Intel: Cooperation for more  economic effectiveness and energy  efficiency

It is  estimated  that the world¹s data centers consume more than 120 billion kWh per year.  This amounts to the output of about 44 nuclear power plants and costs of  around 5.48 billion  euros.

Power consumption associated with IT  will  continue to rise in the future. Quite apart from the economic issues,   this poses challenges in terms of security, availability and the   environment. The Data Center 2020 project is based on the premise  that data  centers could halve the amount of energy currently used  for air conditioning  and decrease their carbon emissions by 80  percent.

The “making of”: Pictures of the creation of the test laboratory

by , published: September 15th, 2009

tagebuch_fotostreckeManuel Mair filmed the creation of the test laboratory from the beginning. A commented picture rail provides an insight into the development of the construction – from the very first sketch in February 2008 until today.

Detailed insights into the inside of the test laboratory give you a slight idea how demanding it will be to strongly rise the energy efficiency of data centers.

Das DataCenter 2020 – Facts and figures

by , published: August 26th, 2009

thumb_datacenter2020The DataCenter 2020 in Munich’s Euro Industrial Park is part of the existing technology partnership between T-Systems and Intel. A primary focus of this partnership is energy-efficiency in the ICT sector. Main objective of the test lab is to issue requirements, recommendations and guidelines for an energy-efficient operation of new or existing data centers based upon the results collected during simulations and tests. The results are made freely accessible to everyone.
